Woollen Apparel Sector in India

India has the 3rd largest sheep population country in the world having 6.40 crores sheep producing 43.30 million kg of raw wool. Out of this about 85% is carpet grade wool, 5% apparel grade and remaining 10% coarser grade wool for making rough blankets etc. Indian sheep average yield of wool is 0.9 kg compared to 2.4 kg global average.

Though India is famous for Pashmina shawls and Angora Rabbit shawls, these are made in small quantities. The industry is broad present in 900+ units in unorganized sector. To become competitive and expand the industry has to go through modernization with latest technology to improve finishing. This will result in better price and lead to further growth in wool growers.
